It made the ABC news blog. And it was both good news and bad news. I’ll tell you the good news first. Deb Thompson is like me, she likes bling. Her daughter was shopping at her local Goodwill, when she ran across a pair of Capri’s that had some “bling.” Deb checked them out and bought them. But when she got home Deb found more bling than she expected. Inside the pocket of the Capri pants was a ring valued at over $6,000.00. Can you imagine how exciting that must have been? But the really good news in this story is she contacted Goodwill to help her find the original owner. I love it when people do the right thing!
Hurrah for honest people. Honesty in every area of our lives should be a reflex. I’m not going to turn this into a culture bashing session, but it is a great checkup reminder. Are we honest, even when no one is looking and no one would ever know the difference? And it’s also a great story to share with our children. That’s the kind of heroes our children need. That’s the kind of stories we can share around the table or when we’re washing dishes together. Stop lights that cause us to reflect on the value and ask ourselves are we honest in both the big and little areas of our lives? What would I have done in that situation? $6,000.00 is a lot of money to most of us. And if you love bling, that ring must have had it! Besides that you know the old adage…finders keepers. Losers weepers. It must have some truth to it or it wouldn’t still be around.
Now for the bad news. Seven people have responded to the announcement that the Goodwill is looking for the owner of a ring that was found. That’s sad, really sad. Nuff said!
2 Kings 22:2 “And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, and walked in all the way of David his father, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left.” “He did what was right in the sight of the Lord,” must be a value that drives our actions. It must be the caution light that makes us slow down and use caution as we travel through life.
Why should we do the right thing, besides the fact that the right thing is the right thing?
It pleases God. That is a huge reason.
It honors the boundaries and guidelines of God Word that is the moral compass for successful living.
Socially, treating others with the same regard we desire, builds a safe and caring community.
It influences others to do the right thing.
It leaves a legacy for our children. When we live instead of only talking it, we are leaving a legacy for our children.
