I have to ask you, “Are you a faultfinder or a faith finder?” I’m asking you, because it’s a question I asked myself early this morning during my prayer time.
Let me explain.
Our Deep Well went out.
It was a huge deal because regulations had changed and finding an appropriate location on that mountain was a daunting ordeal. After much prayer and more stress than I want to admit, a new well was put in place.
Had to check things out.
As soon as we could get away, we went to check on things there. When we pulled into the yard, I saw where my roses and yellow forsythia bushes had been yanked from the ground and left lying on the ground with roots exposed, in the area where the new well was dug.
I wanted to cry.
I knew in the grand scheme of things the loss of those bushes was minor, but it was the last straw. I wasn’t dramatic, but I simply told Bonnie, my friend, about my treasured bushes. She had been praying about the well. She understood the depth of our situation, very well. (I just made a pun, didn’t I!)
Her immediate response was “Awe. I am so sorry!”
That response was so healing. It wasn’t intellectual or fancy. It was heartfelt and exactly what I needed!
Don’t just pretend to love others.
Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good. Romans 12:9 NLT
Have you ever opened your heart to someone
- and they laughed at your situation? Or…
- judged you?
- condemned you for your poor choice?
- barraged you with questions that were too painful to answer?
- told someone else what you had shared with them?
How did you respond?
It hurts doesn’t it?
My purpose for asking you that question is not to open an old wound. (Which by the way, there is healing for old wounds.) Instead my purpose is to ask you “Are you a safe place?
Are you a safe place?
Do you…
- keep people’s confidence?
- gossip?
- judge people when they share their mistakes?
- ask questions out of curiosity?
- encourage them to trust God? Are you …
- critical when you see glimpses of immaturity in people?
- a safe place, in another person’s storm
- a conduit for God to pour His healing through
- Can you be trusted to help someone carry his or her load?
I think it boils down to one question.
Are you a faultfinder or a faith finder.
Do you build faith or point out their faults?
To be totally transparent,
I thought I was pretty good at this, but last night I just blew it! I judged someone instead of seeing them through a lens of faith. I’ve prayed so hard for that person, but I saw them through a lens of impatience instead of through a lens of faith. I know that wasn’t pleasing to God, so when I saw what I had done I repented. I am determined to grow in this area.
When you’ve got issues-
Avoid faultfinders. Find faith-finders.
Faith finders build you up. Faultfinders tear you down.
Faith finders point you to God’s Word for answers that will encourage you and help you get and stay on track.
I want to suggest that if you would look for a faith-finder to help you, and you should, then shouldn’t you be a faith finder as well?
People can feel it when you are.
God will trust us with more when we choose love.
Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted.
2Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.
Galatians 6:1,2 NIV
I am convinced being a safe place for hurting people is one way believers reflect God’s love.
I sure want to be better at it.
