Although it has been one of my excuses for not memorizing Bible verses. I’m discovering that I can’t afford to miss the wonderful benefits that come from memorizing Scripture. The Power of Memorizing Scripture

But did you know that memorizing Scripture can actually improve your brain function? It shapes your thinking, renews your mind, and fills your heart with God’s truth.

The Impact of Thoughts on the Brain

Marilyn Hickey has talked about the benefits of memorizing the Bible for many years.

 Caroline Leaf emphasizes that

“Thoughts are real physical things that occupy mental real estate.

Moment by moment, every day, you’re changing the structure of your brain through your thinking. When we hope it’s an activity of the mind that change is the structure of the brain in a positive and normal direction.” Switch On Your Brain: The Key to Peak Happiness, Thinking, and Health

In a world filled with negativity, it’s hard to find hopefulness and peace. How you think affects your happiness and health. God’s Word produces them into when we think on Scripture. Caroline Leaf says “you can’t sit back and wait to be happy and healthy; you have to make a choice to make it happen.”

I am convinced that memorizing scripture is one strategy toward a choice toward thinking right.

How God’s Word Stopped the Anxiety

 Do you ever feel anxious?

Recently, I flipped off the light to go to sleep. As, I put my head on the pillow and when I did this feeling of anxiousness enveloped me. Immediately, I began to quote Acts 3:16 By faith in the name of Jesus , I immediately, I mean, just with those few words, I began to feel that anxiety leave.

God’s Word is powerful. While it may not always work that quickly, it is powerful.

The Challenge of Memorizing Scripture

Like many people, I’ve often thought, “I can’t memorize.” But recently, I realized that I wasn’t even trying to memorize Scripture because I didn’t believe I could. Philippians 4:13 reminds us that we can do all things through Christ, and that includes memorizing Scripture.

I had to change what I believed and began to intentionally work on memorizing God’s Word. And I needed to ask God to help me! Don’t miss this, it applies to other areas in a believer’s life as well.

Why Memorize Scripture?

Why should you and I memorize Scripture? First, it allows us to have a ready recall of God’s Word, which helps us share our faith and encourage others. But memorizing Scripture also transforms our hearts because we meditate on it, repeat it, and internalize it.

 How to Memorize Scripture

Here are some practical steps to help you start memorizing Scripture:

  1. Get a Notebook: Write down verses that stand out to you. There’s something powerful about writing by hand that helps with memory.
  2. Use Phrases: Memorize Scripture in phrases, as it makes it easier to recall complete thoughts.
  1. Repeat, Repeat, Repeat: Listen to short Scripture verses on YouTube, repeat them out loud, and practice them throughout the day—before bed, in the morning, and during meals.
  2. Use  Scripture verses on YouTube shorts. They repeat. You can repeat the words of the verse as you hear them and see them.

It might be easier to go to my playlist of scriptures that I have posted or you can try it using my video of 2 Corinthians 4:6. ( If you missed my Northern Lights teaching I explained why 2 Corinthians is so precious to me.And  why this verse is important to you when you are facing troubles and storms in life.)

  1. Find a Partner: Practice with someone else. My husband and I practice together during our walks, and it helps us both to stay committed.

Encouragement to Start Memorizing Scripture

I encourage you to hide God’s Word in your heart. In the challenging times we live in, it’s more important than ever to have tools to fight the enemy, and God’s Word is our greatest weapon. Let’s be diligent in memorizing Scripture. If you write to me, ask, “Pat, are you still memorizing Scripture?” I’ll do the same for you because I want you to win in life, and memorizing Scripture is a key to victory.
