I am so thankful for the many times that I and my family have experienced biblical healing! I’ve been digging in God’s Word and testimonies of modern-day healings, lately. That study has built my faith to see God’s power demonstrated. In this post I want to share an inspiring story of a man that was healed because there is power in the name of Jesus.

Smith Wigglesworth: A Vessel of Miracles

God used Smith Wigglesworth in powerful ways to heal the sick. The miracles he witnessed were truly amazing. A few weeks ago, I picked up a book of his sermons, I was captivated from the very first page. One story, in particular, touched my heart deeply. In this post I want to share the story of a church leader who had become seriously ill that didn’t know about biblical healing.

A Desperate Situation

This man was so sick that he was on the brink of death. Someone had given him a tract that referenced James 5:14, which talks about calling the elders of the church to pray for the sick, and verse 15, which promises that the prayer of faith will heal the sick. This man had never seen anyone prayed for in such a way before, but he wondered if his six friends might be able to pray for him.

An Unconventional Idea

So, he called them together, and they came to his house to pray over him. However, after they prayed, the Episcopal leader and his friends were filled with disappointment. Nothing seemed to happen, and they left with heavy hearts, saddened that they hadn’t seen their friend healed. As they were leaving, one of the men had an idea and asked, “Will you go back with me?” He explained, “What if we just say the name of Jesus? Let’s gather around his bed and simply say, ‘Jesus.’”

The Power of Jesus’ Name

They all agreed and returned to the sick man’s bedside. They began to softly whisper, “Jesus, Jesus, Jesus.” As they repeated His name over and over, something miraculous began to happen. They noticed a change in their friend. The more they said His name, the louder they became, and soon, their friend was completely healed. The key to this miracle was that they took their eyes off the illness and focused entirely on Jesus, recognizing the power in His name.

There is Power in the Name of Jesus

This man’s healing reminds me of the biblical healing in Acts 3:16, where the lame man at the Beautiful Gate was healed through the name of Jesus. Peter and John knew that there is power in the name of Jesus.

More than One Way to be Healed

God provides many ways for people to be healed today. One of those ways is through doctors, and I thank God for them. However, I don’t believe that doctors should always be our first recourse. Instead, we should go to God first in everything.

Seeking God’s Wisdom and knowledge

Sometimes, healing comes through wisdom—perhaps we’re eating the wrong foods or overindulging. God’s wisdom can guide us to make better choices that lead to health. Scripture even suggests that we can be healed by praying over our food, being thankful for it, and asking God to bless it, just as Jesus did.

Let’s look at some verses on Biblical Healing

I am so thankful that even today there is power the name of Jesus. His name is above every name!  Therefore, we shouldn’t be surprised when we see miracles. We are healed by the name of Jesus, yet the Bible reveals other ways of being healed too.

The Word of God is another powerful tool for healing, as found in Psalm 107:20.

There is Healing in the Name of Jesus Psalm 107:20 He sent forth His word and healed them

Psalm 107:20 BSB – “He sent forth His word and healed them; He rescued them from the Pit.”

When we speak what Jesus says and declare what the Word of God says about our bodies, as in 2 Corinthians 4:13, we align ourselves with His promises.

2 Corinthians 4:13 BSB And in keeping with what is written: “I believed, therefore I have spoken,” we who have the same spirit of faith also believe and therefore speak,

Healing in the name of Jesus 2 Corinthians 4:13 BSB And in keeping with what is written: “I believed, therefore I have spoken,” we who have the same spirit of faith also believe and therefore speak,

Matthew 7:7 encourages us to ask, seek, and knock.

Matthew 7:7 Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.

And James 5:14 reminds us to call for the elders of the church to pray over the sick.

Call for elders. Anointing With Oil.

James 5:14 Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord.

Prayer of Faith

James 5:15 – “And the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick. The Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven.”

Believe God for Healing

Sometimes, healing is immediate, like in Acts 3:16, while other times, it’s gradual, as in Mark 8:22-26, where Jesus healed a blind man in stages. Biblical healing, through the power of God comes more than one way, and we should come to Him with expectation and faith. The Bible tells us that without faith, we won’t receive anything.

Does everyone you pray for get healed?

Now, you might be wondering, “Pat, does everyone you pray for get healed?” I must honestly say that not everyone does. However, I always come to God standing on the foundation of His Word. I believe that praying for the sick is one of the signs that the kingdom of God has come upon us. It is important for us to pray in faith, trusting God to heal. Then we leave the outcome in His hands, knowing that He understands far more than we do.

Continuing to Believe

There is power in the name of Jesus, healing power. I base my prayer on what God says, even if healing doesn’t manifest immediately, I continue to believe until God either takes the person home or the healing becomes evident. This is what God tells us to do: to act on His Word, not on what we see with our eyes.
