Do Not Fall AWAY!

Don’t Fall

don't fall; stand fast in God's love and graceThis fall has been crazy busy, but again and again I found myself standing on the back porch just drinking in the beauty around me. I want the leaves in all their glory to stay put. I want to say to them, “Don’t fall! You’re so beautiful. Below you’ll see a few pictures from my back porch.

As often as we could, but not nearly often as I would like, Wayne and I hiked trails through the woods. One of my favorite trails is along the Swannanoa River that courses through the park and campus at Montreat College. It’s a noisy hike in the fall. Have you ever noticed how loud dry leaves can sound? The rattle of dry leaves flapping on the ends of thin branches in the gentle breeze call for me to stop and watch. Squirrels and even lizards moving in the leaf piles at the foot of tall trees makes them sound much bigger and more threatening than they are. Or the sound of leaves dancing around in a whirl of dizzying wind, a tiny whirl-wind that blows out as quickly as it comes. And the voice of the water as it tumbles over rock piles, gurgling and laughing as the path twists around and over the rippling stream. The peaceful, wonderful and soothing sounds of fall.

I watch the leaves tumble or float, while others whirl and twirl as they leave the tree where they’ve worked since spring. Sometimes the wind catches the leaves, blowing them off the trees until it looks like it is raining leaves.

But if you are an adult, falling isn’t fun. It’s funny to someone else, but it’s not fun. Just a side note, why is it watching people fall down is so hilarious? And I’m not the only person that laughs when someone falls. America’s Funniest Videos (AFV) celebrated 500 episodes and 22 years of laughing at people fall. Which only proves falling is funny, as long as they don’t get hurt and it’s not you!

But far too often falling isn’t funny and people do get hurt. Ask my friend that broke her wrist from a recent fall. Or my neighbor that was holding a ladder for her husband, when he missed a rung on the ladder, he tumbled down, onto his wife. While it was a soft landing for him, it was a broken leg for her. Falling wasn’t funny to either of them.

So my advice—don’t fall!

Are you thinking, “Yeah? And how am I gonna keep from falling?”

So glad you asked! While carefulness and determination are part of surefootedness, you need more. You can get hurt if you fall physically, but you can hurt your testimony and yourself worse if you fall spiritually. By falling, I mean fall into sin, fall into rebellion or depression or even resentment.

Paul offers some powerful God breathed advice on how not to fall.

2 Peter 1:5-10 nlt So make every effort to apply the benefits of these promises to your life. Then your faith will produce a life of moral excellence. A life of moral excellence leads to knowing God better. 6 Knowing God leads to self-control. Self-control leads to patient endurance, and patient endurance leads to godliness. 7 Godliness leads to love for other Christians, and finally you will grow to have genuine love for everyone. 8 The more you grow like this, the more you will become productive and useful in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 But those who fail to develop these virtues are blind or, at least, very shortsighted. They have already forgotten that God has cleansed them from their old life of sin. 10 So, dear brothers and sisters, work hard to prove that you really are among those God has called and chosen. Doing this, you will never stumble or fall away.

George Washington Proclamation of Thanksgiving

George Washington reason behind a national day of thanksgiving to God

I am thankful for you! Thank you for reading my blog. Thank you for allowing me to share my heart and ministry with you. I am thankful that you have a heart for the things of God and that you are seeking to know Him better and walk more closely with Him.     I […]

More Thinkful! (No, It’s not a Typo)

Thinkful? It’s not a typo. While it’s not actually a word, it’s something we desperately need to do. Let me explain. So much of our thinking is distracted. Noise. Weariness. Busyness. Worry. So many voices clamoring for our attention.   We simply don’t take the time to notice or think about the wonderful things that […]

Unleash the Power of Thanksgiving

That’s right and I mean it too…there is power in giving thanks. You can and should unleash the power of thanksgiving!    And I’m not referring to the big fancy, elaborate “thank you” either. No, the simple two words “thank you” connected to a sincere heart has life changing power.  We are wowed with the […]

Ten Warnings That Could Save Your Thanksgiving.

Ten Warnings That Could Save Your Thanksgiving.

The chances are great that there will be many cooks making their very first Thanksgiving meal this year. I’ve written this blog because I want to help both them and you avoid some cooking blunders that could ruin your Thanksgiving. I must admit, my only claim to fame is “Making the Smoke Alarm Go Off the Most Times in One Year”. And maybe I should tell you that when my children were little, they always ended their blessing with the words, “…and please God, make it good” And while my only qualification for blogging about food is that I like to eat, I still want to share my “Ten Warnings to Save Your Thanksgiving.” Please pay very careful attention to each of them.

ten warnings that could save your thanksgiving

   1. Do defrost your turkey before you pop it in the oven and no, it will not defrost in 30 minutes.

   2. Spaghetti O’s is not a vegetable and it does not go with turkey.

   3. Dressing the turkey does not require a visit to your favorite clothing store.

   4. Forget your Cracker Jack days: Do not leave that little bag inside the turkey. It is not the prize.

   5. Do not set the table with personalized barf bags.

   6. Do not carve the turkey with a chainsaw, even if it is still a little frozen.

   7. Do not fry the turkey inside the house.

   8. Do not put the antacid on the table. But be sure you have some on hand.

   9. If guest will be spending the afternoon, do not serve beans or sweet potatoes.

   10. Do not leave the dog to guard the food while you greet your guests at the door. When someone calls them guard dogs, they are not referring to food.

Can I add one more? Can I make that, Eleven Warnings That Could Save Your Thanksgiving?”  This one is more important than all the rest–“Don’t make Thanksgiving all about the food. OK, maybe that’s what you would expect from someone that is the Smoke Alarm Queen. If your day is only about food, you may feel full and filled, but your day will fall short of FULL FILLING its purpose. Make Thanksgiving about giving thanks.  Express your gratefulness to God.

When you do, everything tastes better. I like that thought—maybe there’s hope for my cooking after all! Blessings on you and your cooking this Thanksgiving!

Thanks Giver Menu- Thanksgiving

Thanks Giver Menu

Thanks Giving I love to cook almost as much as I love to eat. The hardest part is the clean-up afterwards; which often influences my cooking. The second most difficult part of cooking is deciding what to cook, which also influences and limits my cooking to a few favorite recipes. From time to time, I […]

Gift Time Already?

It’s happened already–at least for the gift buyer in the household. We’re already thinking: Gifts; Bargains; Sales. Great Sales, not just the 10% off a price that is already marked about 75% too high, but a really great price slashing sale like you find the day-after-Thanksgiving.    Anybody out there participate in that day-after-Thanksgiving madness? That […]
