Why Pentecost Matters to Christians Today.

Pentecost means fifty Holy Spirit outpouring

Why Is Pentecost Important to Christians Today?

When God called Moses to deliver the children of Israel from bondage, God made a promise to him.

Exodus 3:12

“I will surely be with you,” God said,

“and this will be the sign to you

 that I have sent you:

When you have brought

 the people out of Egypt,

all of you will worship God

on this mountain.”

Finally, Moses and all the people,

standing at the foot of that same mountain, after they had been delivered mightily by the hand of God. Can you imagine how excited Moses must have felt? Do you think he ran up that mountain to meet with God? God had done exactly, miraculously, powerfully, what He said He would do!

But their deliverance was only the beginning

of what God had for His special people. Listen with fresh ears to what God spoke to Moses. Let His divine plan soak into your heart.

 4‘You have seen for yourselves

what I did to Egypt,

 and how I carried you

on eagles’ wings

and brought you to Myself.

5Now if you will indeed obey My voice

and keep My covenant,

you will be My treasured possession

out of all the nations—

for the whole earth is Mine.

6And unto Me

you shall be a kingdom of priests

and a holy nation.’

These are the words

that you are to speak

to the Israelites.”

The events that were about to take place were filled with purpose. God’s plan was to build people, not just a few, but a nation of people, that would serve as priests ministering unto God and out to people.

God gave Moses detailed instructions

for how the people must prepare themselves for the God Encounter that would be taking place in 3 days. That Supernatural and spectacular, talking about fireworks…God’s fireworks display would be spectacular, but it would be overshadowed by the greatness of the God Encounter that would happen exactly 50 days after the Passover that had catapulted them out of Egypt. Pentecost means 50.

They prepared according to God’s instructions. God’s Manifest Presence was seen and experienced by an awestruck nation.

At that first Old Testament Pentecost, they saw and heard…

Big fire on the Mt Sinai, Smoke, Lightning, Ground shaking, Sound of a ram’s horn, God speak the 10 Commandments

God didn’t stop with the 10 Commandments

Exodus 20: 21 BSB

And the people stood at a distance

as Moses approached

 the thick darkness

where God was.

God gave them a pattern for living and worship. He gave Moses the Word.

God didn’t want them to forget.

So, God commanded them to celebrate this event, Pentecost, every year. It was one of the three major feasts every Jewish male was required to attend.

Oh, how quickly we forget.

We must not forget how important the Word of God is in a believer’s life. The Word is essential. As we renew our mind it shapes our beliefs and our choices. Scripture must be the final authority in our lives.

Remember the victories that God has given us; the everyday things, simple things that only a BIG God would notice. Nor, should we forget the big things, the miracles, the messes He got us out of…His provisions, His unending love!

We need the Word of God. It is life to us!! It feeds us spiritually.

Just as Passover was both an event and a prophetic picture, so was Pentecost.

Passover and deliverance were historical events that prophetically pointed to the cross that would deliver people from their sins.

Pentecost was a historical event that pointed to the outpouring of Precious Holy Spirit.

We need the both the Word and the Spirit!

The Next Pentecost, after Jesus went to the Father…

God kept His promise! He sent Precious Holy Spirit! He was the helper Jesus had promised.

The descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost changed the world forever.

We see Holy Spirit moving throughout the Old Testament beginning in Genesis 1 at Creation, but primarily as a visitor who came upon certain individuals for specific tasks or moments. But in the New Testament Pentecost marked something entirely different.

More Than a Date on the Calendar

More than an occasional visitor, Holy Spirit came to fill believers.

Sometimes I think the church has lost sight of a simple reality every bride understands:

“After the wedding… you get to keep the man.”

I’ve lived thankful for that reality in my own marriage for over 50 years. (Okay… there may have been a few days I wasn’t quite as thankful as I should have been!)

Pentecost is more than a day we celebrate once a year,

instead it is a relationship we can enjoy daily.

Holy Spirit is a person, not an it. He is our

Comforter.

Power.

Guide.

Too many roles for me to list here.

Remember what God’s plan was for His people

that I shared at the front of this post,

Peter echoes similar words to both Jew and Gentile believers in

1 Peter 2:9 BSB  This verse if for believers today too. So, take this personal.

But you are a chosen people,

a royal priesthood,

a holy nation,

a people for God’s own possession,

to proclaim the virtues of Him

who called you out of darkness

into His marvelous light.

What a powerful verse!

A glorious verse, that makes me so happy.

Yet, don’t miss this line of the verse…

“to proclaim the virtues of Him”

Yes, through our words Yes! Absolutely!

But also, through

His miracle working power operating through believers to demonstrate His glory in the Earth so He will be glorified!

I am hungry for more of God!
