Jewish People Still Celebrate Shavuot (Pentecost) Today
Today many Jewish families celebrate by:
1. It Celebrates God Giving the Law at Mount Sinai
Shavuot commemorates the moment God gave Moses the Torah (the Law) on Mount Sinai after the Israelites were delivered from Egypt.
This was a defining moment in Jewish history because:
- God entered covenant relationship with His people
- Israel received God’s instructions for living
- The nation was set apart as God’s special people
Many Jewish people see this as the spiritual birth of Israel as a nation.
2. It Celebrates the Wheat Harvest
Originally, Shavuot was also a harvest festival.
It took place 50 days after Passover and celebrated:
- the wheat harvest
- firstfruits
- God’s provision
People brought offerings to the Temple in gratitude to God.
That’s why it is sometimes called:
- Feast of Weeks
- Feast of Harvest
- Day of Firstfruits
3. Pentecost Means “Fifty”
The Greek word Pentecost means “fifty.”
The feast occurred:
- 50 days after Passover
Christians later used the Greek name Pentecost because Acts 2 happened during this Jewish feast.
Pentecost Fulfilled Jesus’ Promise
Before Jesus ascended to heaven, He told His disciples to wait in Jerusalem for “the Promise of the Father.” At Pentecost, God sent the Holy Spirit just as Jesus promised in Acts 1 and John 14–16.
The Holy Spirit Came to Dwell in Believers
In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit often came upon people temporarily for special tasks. At Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came to live within believers permanently as Helper, Comforter, Guide, and Power.
Pentecost Was About Relationship, Not Just Power
Pentecost was not only about signs, wind, fire, or speaking in tongues. It was about believers living in daily relationship with the Holy Spirit — walking with Him, hearing His voice, receiving His help, and revealing Jesus to the world.
2 Corinthians 13:14 NIV
“May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ,
and the love of God,
and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit
be with you all.”
I love this verse!
When I tell you I love this verse, I mean it all the way down to my toes. I want all God has for me!
But I must admit, as much as I love it, it makes me sad…
- I thank God for the saving grace of Jesus that I enjoy as a believer.
- I revel in my heavenly Father’s love,
- Most people stop right there! And that makes me SAD!
But the Bible doesn’t stop there.
- And folks that stop there are missing so much. They are missing out!
- There’s more!
The verse continues… AND THE FELLOWSHIP
What a wonderful word…the fellowship…that’s friendship.
The word “FRIENDSHIP” is a wonderful word!
I have friends that make me laugh.
And some that let me cry…
and some that take me on adventures.
And some that like dishes as much as me!
Oh, how I love my friends!
…some of them read my posts!
Good Friendships are priceless
- They strengthen us.
- Influence us.
- Help us.
- Make us better.
- Keep us from being lonely.
Holy Spirit came to be your Friend.
Oh, what a wonderful friend He is.
He is the Paraclete…
Paraclete means “the one who comes along side of”.
- Comforter
- Advocate
- Helper
- Counselor
- Attorney
- Intercessor
- Guide
YOU CAN experience the power of the Holy Spirit
and the strength that a friendship with Him brings.
Friends?
We can’t be friends with someone we don’t know.
We know him through Scripture and His Presence.
I love how He points things out to me as we read Scripture together.
He never fails to help me pray and guides me away from my will to His Truth.
Precious Holy Spirit is my friend.
- He is God. He is Holy. Absolutely HE IS!
- Still in God’s Divine Design, He inhabits believers and fills them when they ask and believe.
- I call Him Precious Holy Spirit, because He is my dear friend.
- He’s not an it.
- He’s not someone far off.
- He’s my dear, precious friend.
His Presence is my favorite place to be!!!
I was filled with Precious Holy Spirit when I was 12 years old and He’s been my friend ever since. There’s no way that I can explain how precious that friendship has been!
Oh, the difference He has made in my life!!!
I shutter to think where I would be without Him.
I’ve made staying “full” a lifelong pursuit,
because I want to fulfill God’s purpose for my life.
So everyday, including today, I’m celebrating Pentecost, because that day is the day on God’s Calendar that He sent the Paraclete to fill believers and empower us to be His witnesses!!!
